Kenya Mission Trip

Jan 29, 2017

On our final day together as a team we visited a different kind of orphanage, one for abandoned elephants.  It is a 3 to 4 year process to rescue, raise, and then return these baby elephants to the wild.  They must be "adopted" by a herd, and that can take time.  So their care takers gradually introduce them to others, and then wait to see if the adoption takes.

We saw God at work on Friday through some amazing people and institutions.

We started our day with the New Life Homes founders, Clive and Mary. Mary had a dream at age 7 that we would come to Africa. It took 41 years for that dream to come true - she reminded us that some dreams...

We began our day back at the Simurina School.  We gave a few parting gifts, and each of our team members received a handwritten note from one of the students expressing their gratitude for our visit and for Westminster's ongoing support.  We were then able to visit two graduates of Simurina at their new schools.  Simurina begins with 3 year olds and runs through the eighth grade.  Both graduates are now attending boarding schools...

Today we took a field trip with 48 students from the Simurina School to the Nairobi National Park.  It was a tight fit in the school bus - up to four per seat, but an exciting day for us and especially for the children.  Many of them had never seen a lion or zebra or giraffe, despite living so close to the park.  We saw all thoseand more.  We also got to spend more time with the children talking about life in Kenya and in America...

Today we went to school.  For a number of years Westminster has supported the Simurina School, which is sponsored by the local Presbyterian Church.  Simurina is a remote community where access to education is diffilcut.  The school begins with 3 year olds and runs through 8th grade.  If the students do well, they can continue their education by going to High School, which is typically boarding school.

We had a long but full day on Sunday.  We joined our friends Gabrielle and Monica at their local church, Prime Ministry International.  Our devotion for Sunday asked us to look for similarities and differences, and there were plenty of both.  We were warmly received by the pastor and the church leadership.  We recognized that we worship one Lord, share one baptism, and are one church.  Like Westminster, Prime Ministry has a heart...

Our theme for our devotion Saturday was "Receiving."  We knew that as we spent a full day at New Life Home playing with the children and during a work project we would be recieving more than we would give.

We were guided by a quote from Henry Nouwen, "Each day holds a surprise.  But...

We began our first full day with breakfast and our devotional time.  We remembered Psalm 139:7,

After 30 hours of travel, our team arrived in Nairobi, tired but excited about what lies ahead.

It was about 1:00 am local time last night when we checked in at the "CHAK" guest house - short for Christian Hospitality Association of Kenya.  Some of us heard the roosters and singing from another group's morning devotion, and some of us slept through that...

Ten “first timers” serving on Kenya team

This year’s team serving in Kenya includes 10 first-time Kenya travelers, along with four veterans, making for a great mix. The team, which departs Wednesday, Jan. 18,  will primarily be working with our partners at New Life Homes orphanage and Simurina Primary School. Look here for frequent blog posts about their experiences. They conclude their mission trip Jan. 29, although nine members have opted to stay for an additional...
