Mexico Mission Trip

Jul 17, 2017

Bathed in concrete and wearing huge grins, we felt blessed to have worked side by side with our new friends to finish the roof on the classroom building Thursday.   It was hot and the work tough but our memories of that day will be of the evening.

After another fun and frenzied afternoon of VBS, we attended church with everyone....

History and tradition, it’s important.  Wednesday we learned of the origin of Accion.  Maya, whose has been helping us is the granddaughter of Accion’s founder, Oscar Dorantes, Sr.We drove to Merida and toured the student housing quarters.  Students in college are able to stay there while they’re in school. They may not be able to go to school otherwise given the cost of boarding.  A tour of the central square included going into the...

Our morning was spent learning what made up the proper mixture of sand, rock and water to make concrete.  It was also to learn how the team could work together efficiently in a bucket line.  With the mason’s direction and the experience of returning team members, we soon were able to make it look easy. Well maybe not so easy but definitely one body working.  At one point, Lenwood commented that as he looked down the line, it looked like “no one...

Can you say 180 kids?  VBS time was the highlight of the day with the community mothers pitching in to help with the crafts.  Crystal had everything prepared and the kid’s loved putting together craft stick frames and decorating them with stickers and markers.   We also had sidewalk chalk, bubbles plus Frisbees and all sorts of balls.   Storytime was in the church with Pamela and Greg had a wonderful surprise when several young folks...

Sunday

Sunday’s first project was to help move concrete beams and put them in place on top of the church’s new education wing.  After a great breakfast and devotion time led by Carter, we divided into teams and made quick work of the roof’s foundation.  We were blessed to spend our breaks listening to one of the community’s elders singing songs about his Mayan roots.  We laughed with delight as he described how he, as a young...

Off we went down 85 at 0 dark 4:30 excited to start our adventure. Travel was easy with no flight or airport issues. Waiting for our ride to San Pedro provided a great opportunity for people watching. Lots of families arriving on holiday. We were blessed with an air conditioned bus that stayed cool for most of the trip.  Oveth from Accion  met us with a beaming smile as he ushered New team members and thoselthat worked with him last year.

To our surprise, we received the most amazing...

It’s time to leave Akil. While we are all very much looking forward to beds and hot showers at the hotel on the beach, it’s not without some sadness that we leave. After breakfast we rolled up our hammocks, packed our bags and did our best to leave what was shared with us at least as clean as when we came. Imagine opening your home to 22 people (while eight of us slept there, we all ate our meals, had our devotions and generally hung out...

Today was an early one. We were on the job site by 6:45 a.m. to take advantage of the cooler temps. Plus we had a solid 6 hours of work ahead of us. This was the day we had a concrete bucket line going up to the 2nd story roof to fill in those 900 blocks! There were chemical burns for a few team members from the concrete, and one member almost passed out from dehydration. It was a good day to be the last workday.

There were a large number of...

The people of Akil are quite curious about us. This is not a tourist town, and many have never seen a white person. They are never rude – but they will definitely turn their head to watch, giggle as we go by, and freely wave back when we say “hola." The younger bunch of the team – from 14 to 21 – took a soccer ball down to the town center last night and got a USA vs. Mexico game of “football” going with the local kids. Bella (Stark) was our star...

Today was a “rest” day meaning we didn’t work at the church, although we did have VBS again. We started the day as we start every day and every night, with a short devotion given by a member of the team. It’s one of my favorite parts of the week – hearing a new perspective on something from someone new each day. As Lenwood (Collins) explained “it settles our minds to prepare for the day and draws each day to a good end.”

The ruins were impressive – with the...
