Greetings –
As a little boy, I learned a highly formative little song that anchored my faith through my childhood. You probably know it too…
“Jesus loves me, this I know,
for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
they are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.”
Years later when I began studying theology, my heart and mind resonated deeply with the writings of Dr. Karl Barth. The great Swiss theologian was once asked by a student, “…what is the greatest truth that ever crossed your mind?” Dr. Barth looked at the student and said, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
As this simple truth continues to undergird my faith, I often find God more elusive than He was in my childhood. Apparently, the prophet Isaiah carried the same frustration as he once blurted, “Truly, you are a God who hides Himself.” (Isa. 45:15). With that off his chest and ten chapters later, Isaiah realizes, Lord, “my thoughts are not Your thoughts, neither are Your ways my ways.” (Isa. 55:8). 700 years later, Paul would tell the church at Corinth, “We see through a glass darkly; but one day face to face.” (1 Cor 13:12)
I hope you’ll join us Sunday as we consider the “Hiding Places” of God through the lens of a familiar story featuring Mary and Martha. You may not hear what you wanted to hear, but you will hear of the matchless, fathomless, immeasurable grace of God! Bring a friend!
Steve
